If you want to clean up the hierarchy then click the little "-" next to the unfolded higher keys to fold them again. Now, click a few more objects in the view port and try to find them in the object manager. Depending on your initial selection you will either see one object with the same dark orange color as the figure, or you may see an object name with a bright orange color If you have another object name with the same dark orange color then click the "+" to the left of that object to unfold hierarchy of that object Either way, once you find the object name that is bright orange you have your selection. Now, don't worry too much about exactly what that means right now instead focus on the object names. This unfolds the hierarchy one level showing the direct children of the figure object. So, to the left of the object name is a little "+". This dark orange doesn't indicate that the figure is selected what it does indicate is that one of its children is. So, what is going on here? If you select an object again the text once again turns dark orange, but obviously the outline on the object in the view port is indicating that something else is selected. If you clear your selection the text turns back to a light gray. In the object manager the text for figure has turned a dark orange. This updates with information about each object you select, but something else changed as well. When the object was selected, Did you notice what changed? The obvious change is in the attribute manager. Now, click off into an empty area of the view port doing so will clear your selection. Now, try clicking another object and another. If you move your cursor off the object the outline remains.

The preview overlay and the outline disappear and then orange outline is now around the selected object. This is a preview for a selection, and as soon as you click with the left mouse button the object that was under the cursor is selected. If you move your cursor over the figure in a few port you'll notice an overlay and an out line applied to the objects directly below your mouse. Now, when you first open the file nothing is selected.
